Dogecoin Labs joins wallet, app and payment teams

Dogecoin Labs is bringing the MyDoge wallet, DogeOS app network and Such App payment tools under one organization, aiming to give DOGE holders more ways to use the cryptocurrency. The announcement from DogeOS says the independent organization was formed in partnership with the Dogecoin Foundation on Oct. 21. MyDoge and DogeOS founder Jordan Jefferson will lead it as CEO.

The plan connects app developers with wallet users and merchants. Dogecoin Labs will own and operate all three products. The Foundation and House of Doge, its commercial arm, are contributing intellectual property and development teams, according to the announcement.

What can DOGE holders use today?

Such App’s beta supports merchant invoices and in-person payments by QR code, according to the announcement. A QR code is a scannable image that can share payment details. The company says a future connection between Such App and DogeOS is planned; that integration is not yet in place.

MyDoge V3 has rolled out in recent weeks, connecting the wallet to applications being built on DogeOS. The announcement says MyDoge has more than 500,000 users, without paid advertising. It does not say how many are active or have tried DogeOS apps.

How far along is the app network?

DogeOS opened a public test network on Sept. 30, according to DogeOS and CoinDesk’s report. The test network lets developers try applications in an EVM-compatible environment, meaning it uses tools built for Ethereum-style apps. It is for development and testing, not evidence that those apps are ready for everyday use.

CoinDesk reported that DogeOS’s featured applications were still marked “coming soon” three weeks after the test network opened. It also reported that a proposed security link, which would let Dogecoin’s network check whether apps ran correctly, remained in draft form. Until that work is done, DogeOS relies on selected operators and hardware to check its applications.

The Foundation says it will continue its open-source development support, advocacy and community work, while Dogecoin Labs focuses on products and commercial opportunities. The announcement sets out the teams’ plans; it does not establish how many people will use the apps or merchants will accept DOGE.
