Get the Right Token to Repay Crypto Debt
To repay crypto debt, match the borrowed asset and network, check the live payoff amount, then source or swap the exact token before confirming in your wallet.

To repay crypto debt, get the asset the loan is denominated in on the network where you borrowed it. A loan in USDC on one chain usually cannot be repaid with ETH or USDC on another chain. The protocol’s repayment screen shows which debt you selected and what it will accept.
If you hold a different token or your funds are on another network, you may need to swap or bridge first. A bridge moves assets between networks; a swap trades one token for another. For more detail on combining those steps, see this ParaSwap bridge-and-swap walkthrough. The lending market still sets the asset it accepts for repayment.
Which token does my crypto debt require?
Check the borrow position in the lending app and match the token it names. Aave’s repayment guide, for example, tells users to select the borrowed token they want to repay. Compound’s documentation likewise describes repayment using the underlying asset that was borrowed. Token tickers can be reused by unrelated assets, so check the token name and contract address shown by the app, not just the symbol.
Also check the network. The same token may exist on several chains, but balances on one chain do not automatically count on another. The repayment screen or protocol documentation should identify the market and network for the position.
How much do I need to repay?
Use the current amount shown for that debt, since interest can accrue while the loan is open. Aave’s documentation says repayment can be partial or full. If you want to close the position, use the app’s full repayment option when available, then review the amount and transaction details in your wallet before signing.
A partial payment reduces the balance but leaves debt open. A full repayment aims to clear it, though the app may show a small remaining balance if the amount changes before the transaction confirms. Check the position again after confirmation.
How can I get the token I need?
If the token is on the right network but you hold something else, swap into the repayment asset. If your funds are on another network, bridge them to the network where the debt sits, then swap if needed. Compare the amount you will receive with the amount due before proceeding. The swap quote shows its estimated output and price impact; network fees are paid separately in that chain’s fee token.
- Confirm the debt token and its contract address.
- Confirm the network where the borrow exists.
- Check the repayment amount again just before swapping.
- Keep enough of the network’s fee token to submit transactions.
What should I check before confirming?
Review the destination token, network, estimated output, and fees in the swap or bridge flow. Then return to the lending app and confirm it recognizes the token in the wallet for repayment. Aave’s repayment guide notes that ERC-20 repayments may also require approval, which lets the protocol move the token from your wallet. Approve only the token and transaction you intend to use.
